This sensor outputs a variable voltage proportional to the strength of magnetic field in its vicinity. You can connect it to an Arduino analog IO pin to detect magnetic fields. There are many uses for this, for example attach a small magnet to part of a mechanism, then you can detect when that part comes near the sensor without any contact (as would be necessary for a switch).
